Selling Stuff

Craig's list is a great site to sell things, especially furniture. If you aren't familiar with Craig's List let me fill you in. Here's a link to Craig's List.

Once you get to the page select your city or state from the list on the right. Then click on "my account" on the left side of the page. One of the choices on the page will be to sign up for an account. It's free. It's also free to list items for sale. Ads automatically drop off after seven days.

After you have established an account you're ready to post an ad. We had a crib, a kitchen set, and an entertainment center that we wanted to sell. We posted descriptions and pictures, which is very easy to do. The crib was sold within two hours and the kitchen set in less than 24 hours. But that solid wood entertainment center that we paid $1,600 for 5 or 6 years ago? Nobody wanted it. It could only hold a 33" old-style TV and everyone is buying the 40" or 50" or larger wide-screen TVs.

A word of caution, however. Beware of scammers! Insist on local buyers only, pickup only, and cash only.

We posted both a phone number and an email address (Craig's List masks your true email address with a temporary one). We received several emails from people wanting to send us a check for the kitchen set and have us ship the goods. You can bet that the checks would have bounced. Now I omit any email address and just post my cell phone number when I post ads. Honest people will call and come over to buy your stuff.
